24 Years of Friendship: Writing a New Chapter Together

MS FANG QIAN, TEACHER - CHINESE

Yesterday, Riverview proudly welcomed visitors from our sister school, the High School Affiliated to Beijing Institute of Technology, in a vibrant celebration of a friendship that has flourished for 24 years.

The day commenced with a formal welcome ceremony at Cova Cottage for our delegation of 5 teachers and 37 students from Years 7 to 11. We were honoured by the presence of College Rector Fr. Tom, Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning Mr. Lloyd Walker, and Head of Languages Ms. Louella Perrett. Their addresses reflected the profound connection between our two schools and the shared values that have sustained this partnership for over two decades. Furthermore, they expressed a deeply warm welcome to our guests, setting a tone of hospitality and genuine fellowship for the visit.

As Confucius famously said, 有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎? (Is it not a joy to have friends come from afar?). This sentiment resonated throughout the morning, particularly during a retrospective screening of our 2018 and 2025 SIC visits to China. These moments allowed students and staff to relive cherished memories and appreciate how much our partnership has evolved over time.

Student voices were at the heart of the ceremony. Henry Martin from Year 12 reflected in Chinese on 2025 trip to Beijing in a humous way expressed our gratitude to sister school’s hospitality. The sister school student representative delivered a confident, engaging introduction to their school in English, showcasing linguistic ability and cultural awareness that highlighted the power of language in building genuine understanding.

A particularly moving highlight was the gift exchange ceremony, where Riverview received a friendship panda and an exquisite brocade ornament. These thoughtful tokens symbolised the deep goodwill, trust, and enduring friendship between our schools.

Following the ceremony, students engaged in ice-breaking activities before embarking on a campus tour. From recess through to lunch, paired buddies explored the College together. Our Chinese language students exemplified the Riverview Spirit, demonstrating exceptional responsibility and hospitality as they helped their buddies feel at home within our community.

By joining mentor groups and attending classes, our visitors experienced a typical Riverview day firsthand. Watching students from different hemispheres connect so naturally through curiosity and laughter was a powerful reminder that while language is the bridge, culture is the bond.

This visit was a truly "win-win" experience, providing students from both schools with meaningful insights and memories that will last a lifetime.

We extend our sincere thanks to all who made this day possible.
