Recreation plays a central role in boarding life at Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview.

The College recognises that downtime, physical activity and social connection are essential to the well-being of every boy. With access to outstanding facilities and a diverse program of activities, boarders enjoy a healthy balance of structure, freedom and fun throughout the week.

Our natural setting

Riverview’s natural setting along the Lane Cove River creates a unique environment for recreation.

Boys can spend time outdoors, enjoy water-based activities, and make use of the open spaces around the boarding houses. The campus layout encourages exploration, physical movement and time spent in nature, which contributes significantly to student wellbeing.

Gartlan Sports Centre

The Gartlan Sports Centre is a major hub of activity for boarders.

With indoor courts, a heated pool, a rock climbing wall and extensive fitness and conditioning facilities, it gives boys the chance to stay active in all weather conditions. Whether they are playing basketball with friends, training for a sport or building strength in the gym, the centre provides opportunities for boys of all interests and fitness levels.

Outdoor recreation is just as important. Boarders can access the ovals, riverfront and recreation areas for informal games, organised activities or simply spending time with friends. Touch football, cricket, basketball and general outdoor play are common afternoon and weekend pastimes. This space fosters camaraderie and gives boys room to relax after the structure of the school day.

Riverside boat house

The riverside boat house opens the door to water sports and skills-based recreation.

Rowing, canoeing and kayaking are available through both structured programs and casual sessions, allowing boys to experience teamwork, discipline and enjoyment on the water. Fishing from the pontoons is another popular activity, particularly for younger boarders looking to discover new hobbies.

Creative recreation

Creative recreation is also encouraged.

Music rooms, art spaces and performance areas offer boys an outlet for expression and personal interest. Boarders involved in ensembles, bands or personal music practice can access dedicated facilities to explore their talents. For others, these spaces provide a different kind of relaxation and personal focus.

Weekends

Weekends offer an expanded program of recreational opportunities.

Organised outings, outdoor adventures and supervised activities give boys variety and help them build confidence in new settings. Casual walks to Lane Cove, weekend sport, fitness sessions and trips to the boatshed contribute to a rhythm that feels both structured and enjoyable. These shared experiences strengthen friendships and create memories that many boys remember long after their time at Riverview.

Recreation for boarders is designed with purpose. It supports physical health, emotional well-being, social growth and the development of positive lifelong habits. By offering a broad mix of activities in a safe and supportive environment, Riverview ensures that every boarder has the opportunity to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

The Sunday Boarding activities are always one of the highlights of my week; having a laugh with my mates at the beach, fishing, hiking, or even treetop adventures. They’re also a great chance to make new some friends in other year groups and to explore Sydney!
