Music has long been a cherished part of life at Riverview, enriching the College community and offering students opportunities for creativity, self-expression, and collaboration.
Since 1882, when Music was first introduced to the curriculum, the College has fostered a culture of musical engagement that continues to flourish today in The Woods Music Centre, named for the 100 pine trees planted on the site in 1905.
The Woods Music Centre hosts academic Music classes for Years 7–12, private tuition in Music and Drama, practice studios, and Co-Curricular Ensemble rehearsals and performances. Open Monday to Friday under supervision, the Centre is a welcoming space for students to explore and develop their musical abilities.
At the Regis Campus, students in Years 5 and 6 are introduced to Music through academic classes and the mandatory Music Activities Program. In Years 7 and 8, Music continues in Stage 4, with students learning percussion, keyboard, and guitar. From Years 9 to 12, students may choose Music as an elective, enabling them to focus on their chosen instrument and further develop their proficiency.
Overseas and local Music Tours are conducted regularly to motivate and inspire our students.
Being a member of a Riverview Ensemble gives a student the opportunity to be part of a music team which rehearses weekly, before or after school.
These take place frequently throughout the year, allowing numerous occasions to showcase student and ensemble achievements. These include Solo Recital Evenings, Riverview in Concert, Riverview Music Gala Evening, Jesuit Mission Bazaar, internal concerts, performances at Assemblies, Masses and other in-school events, in addition to many external events and concerts.
This alternates between a Senior School musical involving students in Years 7 to 12, and a Junior School musical involving Years 5 to 8.
The Music Private Tuition Program gives all students the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. The College offers private lessons on a wide variety of musical instruments. All lessons are conducted by professionals in their field.
There are a number of instruments for hire through the College. Wherever possible, students are encouraged to have their own instrument.
