Our Centre for Learning Enrichment

At Riverview, we aim to promote and support the values and principles of inclusive education. We celebrate difference and diversity, recognising this as a core component of our approach to teaching and learning.

The goal of the Centre for Learning Enrichment is to create a learning environment in which students with a wide range of learning needs — including those who require additional support and those who show high levels of ability or talent — can progress at an appropriate pace, experience success, reach their potential, and feel a genuine sense of belonging within our school community.

Our team fosters a collaborative approach to learning and curriculum design, working closely with teachers and external professionals to support the needs of all students.

Riverview Academy

Riverview Academy is the College’s after-school study program for students in Years 7 to 12, designed to support boys in achieving their academic potential while fostering habits of disciplined and reflective learning.

Each afternoon, students are able to remain on campus to participate in structured, supervised study, revision, and review sessions led by College staff, alumni, and external tutors. These sessions, tailored to meet the individual needs of each student, provide an environment that helps them deepen academic understanding, consolidate skills, and develop confidence in learning.

Operating Monday to Thursday during each term (excluding the final week), the Academy offers students a unique opportunity to engage fully with their studies, supported by experienced mentors in a focused and encouraging community.

Our Inclusion Program

The Special Education Inclusion Program (SEIP) commenced in 2007 as a response to the needs of the College and wider community to accommodate students with intellectual disabilities.

The Inclusion Program is dynamic and responsive to the needs of the individual student. It offers mainstream integration opportunities with an emphasis on pastoral care in Mentor groups.

The students follow the NESA Life Skills course from Year 7 to Year 12.

The Senior Transition Program, the final stage of the program, is of central importance for students in Years 11 and 12. The program aims to include work experience, travel skills, independent living skills and the use of appropriate social skills to support optimal post-school options.

Faculty Tutorials

Tutorials are offered by many faculties to supplement learning and provide students with opportunities to ask questions and seek feedback.

Tutorials are staffed by our specialist teaching staff offering subject-specific assistance in a familiar environment. These tutorials are free of charge. Students do not need to register and are welcome to attend at any time.

Support

Curriculum Support

We recognise that every classroom encompasses a wide range of abilities, and that some students may require differentiated learning pathways to achieve their potential. The Curriculum Support team works closely with teachers to ensure that students with additional needs are appropriately supported in the classroom. This approach honours the student voice in the learning cycle and encourages thoughtful curriculum design that responds to the diverse needs of our student population.

Support for staff begins with the pre-enrolment assessment of new students, ensuring that Directors and teaching staff have timely access to relevant information about individual learning needs. This supports a smooth and informed transition for students who require additional support.

The Learning Enrichment team prepares and monitors funding submissions to support the inclusion of students with disabilities in mainstream classes, ensuring that appropriate resources are in place for meaningful participation.

In addition, the team offers guidance and encouragement to staff in designing enrichment and acceleration programs for students identified as gifted, fostering opportunities for high-ability learners to engage in challenging and rewarding pathways.

English Language Support

Supporting students from non-English speaking backgrounds is an integral part of the College’s Centre for Learning Enrichment. This is not an ESL program, as the College expects overseas students to have achieved a foundational level of English prior to enrolment.

Students meet weekly, for one hour, with a specialist teacher on a one-to-one basis, with these sessions timetabled as part of their regular school program. These lessons aim to strengthen students’ written and oral communication, enhance their understanding of set texts, and assist with interpreting class assignments and assessment tasks. In addition, students receive guidance in managing their workload and developing effective time-management strategies, equipping them to thrive across all areas of College life.

Specialist Staff

The Learning Enrichment team is strategically positioned to provide support across all year levels, ensuring students receive timely and tailored assistance.

A range of additional specialist services is also available through the Centre, including occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychological support, and access to dedicated literacy and numeracy centres. The College maintains valuable partnerships with external organisations, such as the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, as well as with a number of university faculties, to further enhance the support and opportunities available to our students.

Referral

Students may be referred to the Centre by their parents or teachers, or when school-based or independent testing indicates a need for targeted support. Prospective parents are welcome to discuss their son’s needs with the Head of Centre or any of the specialist teachers, prior to enrolment or at any time after commencement at Riverview.
