Religious Education

Being a Catholic school following in the Ignatian tradition, Religious Education is a compulsory subject for years 5 through to years 12 at the College.
The formal curriculum is comprised of a comprehensive understanding of Catholic theology and Ignatian philosophy. It is developed sequentially and is directly linked to the cognitive development of the students. Each year encompasses many areas of the boy’s development – the content covered during class, their retreat experiences and the demands of community service. The themes are as follows:

  • Year 5 Who am I and who is God
  • Year 6 Being called to live out God’s message in my life.
  • Year 7 Finding God in all things.
  • Year 8 Dare to do your best.
  • Year 9 Pilgrims on the journey – taking charge of my life- looking at my rights and responsibilities.
  • Year10 I can make a difference – in the service of others.
  • Year 11 Giftedness -I am in charge of my life.
  • Year 12 Being a man for others – my inner journey.

Students in all years are expected to actively engage in their Religious Education classes and complete a number of varied forms of assessment – enabling students with differing learning styles to be able to succeed. Incorporated into their formal lessons, there is the opportunity to experience class liturgies that are directly relevant to the content that is being covered.

Over the past few years the HSC Studies of Religion board course has become more popular with the senior students. This course is based on the understanding that religion deals with daily living and provides a perspective for the human view of reality. It allows students to examine the critical role religion plays in enabling believers to make sense of the human experience. It endeavours to provide the opportunity to foster student’s physical and spiritual development. Results at this level are continuing to improve with most students having this subject counting in one of their best ten units for their UAI.
