St Ignatius' College commenced in 1880 and since then sport has been a regular part of the education program. Since then we have participated in sports competitions within the AAGPS of NSW (founded in 1882), State and National Championships and other Associations competitions. The following lists our achievements in sports and activities since 1880.
AAPGS (Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools of NSW) Basketball competition commenced 1975Our major achievements have been a First Grade Premiership in 1978 and Second Grade Premierships in 1994, 1996 and 2004. Further the GPS Raschke Cup (Round-Robin competition) has been won by the First Grade in 2001 and 2002.
CRICKET competition commenced 1893Cricket was played in the first year of the College with matches with local clubs and in 1892 the GPS competition commenced. In 1992-93 the 1st XI not only won the G.P.S. Premiership but also won the N.S.W. Schools Championship and the Australian Schools Championship.
CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING competition commenced 1988Cross Country began at Riverview in 1975 when the school began to enter teams in the City to Surf. By 1980, the squad was running in other fun runs and, in 1981, Cross Country became an official winter sport with some interschool events such as the Riverview Road Relay Race, which was first run in 1982. In 1987, Riverview produced its first State Representative in Cross Country. In 1994, Riverview won its first individual gold medal in the City to Surf and, by 1995, had won 11 team medals and 3 individual medals in this popular event. In 1994, our first runner was selected in the Combined GPS Representative Cross Country team and 5 boys were selected in the inaugural Combined Independent Schools Cross Country team. In 1999, Riverview produced its second State Representative in Cross Country and its third in 2006.
FOOTBALL competition commenced 1988This became an official GPS sport in 1987 and since that time has been growing steadily in all schools to be now the largest winter code in four other GPS schools. The name change occurred in GPS schools in 1994 to Association Football and again in 2006 to identify the commonly used global name of football. Our success has been built on development and consistent improvement with the initial Premierships in 1999 and success in the CIS "The Schools' Cup" elimination style competition in 1997.Today, the College has established an enviable reputation in the GPS Competition and has won ten of the eighteen premierships this decade. It is now the elading school in 1st XI competition with eight titles and a further six 2nd XI premierships.
ROWING competition commenced 1893Rowing dominated the summer sporting life of the College in the first decades, and the Rowing Club celebrated its century in 1982. The first shed was built in 1883 and Fr Thomas Gartlan SJ, in whose name a trophy has been donated to the GPS competition, promoted the sport greatly. The Mayor's Cup, won in 1884, was the Club's first trophy. The Riverview Regatta commenced in 1885 and has attracted thousands of spectators each year. In 1893 the residents of Lane Cove donated towards the making of a Gold Cup, which cost 199 guineas, and which we won for the first time in 1997! The new Rowing sheds were built in memory of Fr Gartlan SJ in 1953 and a refurbishment program commenced to coincide with the 125th anniversary season on 2007.
C D Taylor Shield (senior pointscore) for the most successful Shed 2002 RUGBY competition commenced 1892Introduced to the College in 1892 as the second football code we entered the GPS competition in 1907. We had to wait until 1961 for our first Second Grade Premiership and fifty-three years for our historic First Grade premiership in 1964. In 1996 the First XV won the Premiership undefeated for the first time. Further success has been more consistent as the school presents amongst the largest n umber of teams in independent schools each season. The growth in enrolment, playing ability and enthusiasm for the sport has seen the College since the late 1990s gain its most consistent level of achievement. The 1st XV premierships in 2003 and shared in 2006, 2008 and 2009 along with three 2nd XV Premierships since 2000 and runners-up positions in both grades sees the College become recognised as one of the stronger playing schools. In 2009 the College retained the 1st XV premiership and in doing so acheived this for the first time in 101 GPS seasons.
SWIMMING competition commenced 2003Swimming, as an inter-school sport, began in the mid-1940s with some GPS schools providing relay teams for competition against each other. We first entered teams during the mid 1970s and we won GPS relays in 1981 and 1993. In 2002 swimming became an official GPS sport with the introduction of a points score system at the international Carnivals. Since then the sport has grown with the GPS representative team being selected for the CIS (Combined Independent Schools of NSW) Championships each year and subsequently in the CIS team to State Championships and the NSW All-Schools Team for Schools Sport Australia Schools Championships. Our swimmers also enter State and National All Age Championships with clubs and attain some significant results.
TENNIS competition commenced 1972Our first Tennis court was constructed where it is in 1882, and others asphalted in the mid 1890s. Tennis became a GPS sport in 1972 and we won our first Premiership in 1982. Since then the sport has grown dramatically with eleven First Grade and sixteen Second Grade premierships since. We have also gained considerable success at the CIS and National School level recently. The success of the sport comes from good facilities, supportive external coaches, a whole year program with teams in both GPS and local Northern Suburbs competition throughout the year.
TRACK AND FIELD competition commenced 1892In Track and Field our strength did not occur until the 1960s, although we won the GPS Junior section (U13-U16) three times from 1957 to 1959. In the 1960s we won the Senior Division four times, and seven times since. The coaching of the then First Prefect, Fr B. Leonard SJ, had much to do with our success. The coveted "double win", Junior and Senior was accomplished in 1964, 1965, 1967, 1982, 1985 and 1998. Riverview has been consistently highly placed in both Seniors and Juniors. In 2006, we won both Divisions for the fourth time in the last five years. No other GPS school, apart from ours in 1998, has completed this winning double in the last ten years.
RIFLE SHOOTING competition commenced 1903The College participated in the GPS Rifle Shooting competition from 1882-1987. The closure of the Rifle Range with development did not see a new facility opened. As other sports became of greater interest and we expanded beyond the GPS sports it has since been decided not to re-introduce the sport. OTHER SPORTS COMPETITION PREMIERSHIPSSt Ignatius' College participates in other Associations sports competitions. AUSTRALIAN RULESFr Dalton SJ did not like 'that horrid Rugby Rule' and for the first twelve years Riverview played only Australian Rules. It was believed the popularity of Australian Rules in the other states would also spread to NSW, so Riverview attempted to be ahead of the times! Also, the early playing fields were mostly shingle, not a pleasant carpet on which to receive a rugby tackle. Although we changed to Rugby in 1892 we did not enter the GPS competition until 1907, and even in that year there was much interest in the first Saint Ignatius' with Saint Joseph's a draw: 11-11! Australian Rules Football resumed after a break of 92 years in the 1980s and has since then established a strong presence in the school. Our lower teams play in the NSW-ACT Greater Sydney Juniors North Harbour competition and the U18 1st XVIII team in the NSW-ACT U18 Competition. We entered this competition in 2004 to provide a permanent pathway for the boys to play the sport through the whole school. Our initial success was gained with a 2005 premiership and again in 2007. The College has maintained a growth and development focus with four additional teams in 2009 to see us field nine teams and for the first time gradings occur in the U13-14-16 age groups. All Junior (U12-16) teams play on a Sunday which provides boys the opportunity to play two winter codes for the school.
Since 2004 the 1st XVIII play in the Sydney Australian Football U18 competition Premier Cup 2005, 2011 Premiers Challenge Cup 2007 Premiers
FENCINGIn 1991, when the Gartlan Centre was opened Fencing was introduced. There is a small group of boys who train and compete in the all-year sport and achieved some good success at the inter-school level. We have entered up to three teams in different inter-school competitions. In 2000 we were successfully crowned National Schoolboy Champions. In more recent years teams consistently compete in the NSW Junior Fencing League competitions and enter State Age and Opens Championships. NSW Schools Championships (Teams): 2005 NSW Schools Championships (Individuals): 2005 SAILINGSailing began at Riverview on March 19,1983. Although the College is situated ideally on the Lane Cover River, sailing had never been available as a sport for the boys before this time. Many boys have been introduced to the sport since and have gone on to join other sailing clubs as well as our own. Our first World Champion in the College's history, Michael Walsh, won his title in January 1988 in the sport of sailing, eight years after leaving the College. The Club now has its own boatshed, and owns several Lasers, Flying IIs and Mirrors. In the early days the boatshed was an old disused garage 300 metres from the water. Today, a more modern facility exists with the new Cova Cottage. The secret to the success of the Club has been the enthusiasm of the boys themselves, as well as the great support of staff and parents. The school enters the annual Tri-Series competition for independent schools and when the experienced sailors are available also into State and National Championships. It is pleasing to see a number of boys sail for clubs and in different classes gain success and representation at state and national levels. The unprecedented success of the sport this decade is testimony to the skilled sailors we have and the devoted and significant input of the coaching staff and support of parents. WATERPOLOIn 1991, coinciding with the opening of the Gartlan Centre, Water Polo was introduced. In Water Polo we have two teams in the Independent Schools Competition. The competition is conducted in summer terms and is among Combined Associated Schools (CAS) and Great Public schools (GPS) in the Opens, Under 16 and Under 14 age groups. Players have also gained selection in the CIS representative teams (1sts and 2nds) and can follow this pathway to NSW All-Schools selection. Further, a number of players regular play for clubs and gain selection in State Under Age teams for Championships.
ACTIVITIES COMPETITION PREMIERSHIPSSt Ignatius' College participates in numerous competitions as part of our Co-Curriculum Activities programs. DEBATINGDebating is possibly the oldest association in the College, dating from 1881 when Fr John Ryan SJ, founded the Senior Debating Club. Fr Ryan was later Rector of Riverview, Xavier and Saint Patrick's, and Superior of the Australian Mission and formerly President of Saint Stanislaus, Bathurst, before he entered the Society of Jesus. The outstanding success of the College in GPS competitions is evident with an unsurpassed record in 1sts premierships since 1964 and since the 1980s in the 2nds premiership. Today, the College enters four competitions throughout three Terms and meets with regular success in all of these. The significant number of boys who participate and gain regular competition and extensive coaching is a major reason for our sustained success in this most important area of life long learning. Our success has been also evident in the Lawrence Campbell Oratory Competition with twenty winners since 1935.
PUBLIC SPEAKINGLawrence Campbell Oratory Competition commenced 1935 An oratory competition commenced in 1935 for GPS and CAS schools in NSW. Named in honour of Lawrence Campbell. The College has won this prestigious competition twenty times, more than any other school.
Trinity Grammar Oratory Competition Winner: 2007, 2008
The Year of the TrophiesThis year was a wonderfully successful one for the College after quite a few lean years in GPS Competitions. Both Junior and Senior Track and Field won, the Major Rennie Trophy (1st VIII) and Yaralla Cup (1st IV) were won at the Head of the River Regatta and the 1st XV secured our inaugural GPS Premiership. In Debating we won the non-GPS trophy in the Louat Shield and Cliff Hoeben won the prestigious CAS/GPS Lawrence Campbell Oratory competition. 2002 - Our Greatest Ever Year
