The Awarding of Blues

It is intended that this award be difficult to achieve and that its recipients be rewarded appropriately. A 'Blue' may be awarded only to a student in Year 12 who has demonstrated consistently outstanding commitment to, and consistently outstanding performance in, a College activity throughout his time at the College.

Boys still at school who excel in a non-College activity may be eligible to receive a 'Blue' for that activity. Such a boy may also be awarded a line on his College Blazer. Retrospective awards may also be made to those who have excelled in a College or non-College activity.

Procedure

Nominations written by the Master-in-Charge of the activity/sport should be received by the Director of Co-Curriculum - Chairman of the Colours Committee before the end of terms 1, 2 or 3. The Colours Committee will meet to consider such nominations and may wish to interview the Master-in-Charge of the activity/sport. The Chairman will meet with the Headmaster for final approval and the announcement and awarding of Blues will occur at the Valete Assembly.

Written nominations should be presented as objectively as possible with as much supporting detail as can be provided.

General Criteria for all Awards

  • The boy nominated should display excellence in performance, sportsmanship, commitment, service and scholastic achievement in his College endeavours and bring credit to the College by his general behaviour.
  • The boy nominated should have shown dedication to the ideals of the College; should have attended training and practices diligently and should have assisted and supported the activity throughout his time at the College.
  • All nominees are expected to have a balanced involvement in the life of the College.

Colours are awarded at the discretion of the Colours Committee and with the approval of the Headmaster after the Master-in-Charge of the activity/sport has nominated boys for consideration. General Principles Applied when Colours are Awarded for Various Activities/Sports

Colours may be awarded to members of various activities on the following bases:

  1. Membership: If there are three or more Open teams in the activity/sport, members who participate in more the required number of games may be automatically nominated for Colours.
  2. Performance: If there are fewer than three Open teams in the activity/sport, Colours may be awarded on a limited basis dependent on the co-operation and attitude to and at training of the members.
  3. Regular participation at training is presumed in order for a candidate to be nominated for colours.

The Committee's discretion may be applied for boys who do not initially qualify for the award of Colours by reasons of illness, injury or accident.

Where injury prevents a boy from fulfilling the participation or training requirements, the Master-in-Charge of the Activity/Sport may nominate the boy, setting out full reasons as to why Colours should be awarded. Injuries sustained through imprudent behaviour will not constitute an exemption from the normal regulations. Approval may then be granted at the discretion of the Colours Committee for nominations for presentation to the Headmaster.
