In 1925 solar radiation observations began at Riverview Equipment cosisted of spectro-bolometer, two silver-disc pyrheliometers and a pyranometer. These instrucmentsn were constructed by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington. It was hoped that the discovery of variations in the readiation from the sun might lead to long-range weather forcasting.

Soon after the installation it because apparent that Riverview was at too low an altitude for work with the spectro-bolometar.Observations of the brightness of the sun with the pyrheliometers were carried on until 1931 and observations of the brightness of the sky with the pryanometer were carried out until 1930.

The instruments were later transferred to Mt. Stromlo Observatory.

During the 1990's computerised equipment was installed at the Weather Station on 4th field.
