Riverview has won the NSW Catholic Schools Primary Basketball State
Championships. This is the first time an independent Catholic school has
won the state championships. It’s also only the fifth time a Sydney
school has won the title in the past 23 years.Twenty-two schools from across NSW took part in this month’s NSW Catholic Schools Primary Basketball State Championships. The championships are an annual event that attracts primary teams from across the state. This year, due to the large number of entrants, the championships were held in two venues, at Sutherland and at Bankstown. Saint Ignatius' College took part in the Senior Boy’s competition and was represented by Patrick McElhone, Charlie Freeman, Oliver Gohl, Benjamin Hawtin, Conor Barnes, Joseph Murphy, Daniel Pribula, Tim Bigg, Thomas Flood and Jack Robertson, from the Regis Campus. In the preliminary rounds the boys played extremely well defeating schools from Young, Cronulla and Queanbeyan. At the end of the first day Riverview was ranked first in Division 1 with a for and against total of 145 to 13. This ranking meant that Riverview had the best of the draws in the quarter and semi finals. Riverview proved too strong for eighth-placed Tumut and then defeated St Joseph’s Kingswood, who had earlier eliminated tournament favourites Albury. This win earned Riverview a place in the Grand Final against Saint Peter and Paul’s School, Goulburn. Both teams played contrasting styles of Basketball, however, ultimately Saint Ignatius’ College won, 16-11. The boys were coached by Riverview teacher, Mr Peter Rizzardini. |
