About The College
overhead.gifSaint Ignatius' College, Riverview is a Catholic school for day boys and boarders from Years 5-12. It was established by the Jesuits at Lane Cove in Sydney in 1880 and is part of the international network of Jesuit schools begun in Messina, Sicily in 1548.

At Riverview, our aim is to educate students so that they may become young men of competence, conscience and compassion, striving always for excellence in all they do.

Our motto, Quantum Potes Tantum Aude, “As much as you can do, so much dare to do”, reflects this central theme of Jesuit education.

Jesuit education insists on individual care and concern for each student. At Riverview, we have developed an academic program and pastoral care system, which enable a boy to reach his full potential as a person of faith, created and loved by God.

“Our ideal is the well rounded person who is intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to doing justice in generous service to the people God,” Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach SJ, Superior-General of the Society of Jesus, The Characteristics of Jesuit Education, 1986

The Rector of the College is Rev Fr Ross Jones SJ. Fr Jones grew up in the Jesuit parish of St Mary's North Sydney. He graduated with honours in biochemistry and began his teaching career at St Aloysius' College in 1974, taking science in the senior years. During this period he completed a Master's degree in Education and a Diploma in Theology. After ten years, the last four of which as Year 11 Form Master, he left to join the Jesuit novitiate at Canisius College in Pymble. At the completion of novitiate, he took vows in the Dalton Memorial Chapel at Saint Ignatius’ College.

Philosophy and theology followed for five years in Melbourne, during which time he was for one year the Junior Boarding Master at Xavier College. He tutored in medical physics at Newman College, Melbourne for a number of years. Fr Jones was ordained at the end of 1990 at St Mary’s. He then moved to the Parramatta Diocese where he was appointed Foundation Principal of Loyola College in Mount Druitt, a co-educational senior high school. He was responsible for the building and development of the project and was Principal until 1997.

The Provincial of the day then appointed Fr Jones Socius to the Provincial, Provincial Assistant for Schools, and Australian Secretary to the Jesuit Education Conference of East Asia-Oceania. He has been particularly involved in the Jesuit school network throughout East Asia-Pacific. Riverview was also an early interest where he served on the College Council from 1993 to 2003. He has a passionate interest in the history of Jesuit education and the Society's particular charism and ethos as manifested in the educational apostolate. Fr Jones completed the final phase of his Jesuit formation (Tertianship) in the Philippines in 2003-04. These experiences led him to develop the Philippines Immersion Programme for students, Old Boys and parents, firstly at St Aloysius’ and now at Saint Ignatius’.

Fr Jones served as Rector of St Aloysius’ College from 2003 until 2010 and was then appointed Rector of Saint Ignatius’ College, commencing second term 2011.

The current Principal of Riverview is Dr Paul Hine, who was appointed Principal in April 2013 after the departure of Mr Shane Hogan, whom had served as Riverview's first lay Headmaster for more than ten years. Dr Hine joined Riverview from Sacred Heart College Senior in Somerton Park, SA, where he was Principal. Paul's strong commitment to social justice has been demonstrated in his efforts to increase education, especially to those from disadvantaged populations. Through past experience Paul has developed strategic links with local and regional communities, and initiatives to support Indigenous and refugee students.
